Los Angeles Newborn Photographer | DIY December, family traditions and the season of Advent…

I have always loved the month of December.  I love getting to celebrate the holidays with my husband, children, family and friends and  I love the little traditions we keep up every year!!!

Aside from the trip out to get our Christmas tree and the trip to meet Santa, we have a few other family traditions we do each year.  One very fun (and a little bit nutty) tradition involves Christmas lights and the Wienerschnitzel!!!  Every year we pile in the car and head out on a school night to go see the Christmas lights.  First stop is always at the Wienerschnitzel for some chili dogs and french fries.  Once we wrap up with dinner we head over and drive through our favorite neighborhood that always goes crazy with holiday decorations!  We love seeing what decorations each house has and seeing which are new and which ones are our favorites from the years prior, and we love listening to the carolers as they walk around the neighborhood singing. Once we are done checking out the lights we HEAD BACK to the Wienerschnitzel for some chocolate dipped ice cream cones.  Definitely NOT the healthiest of nights but absolutely one of the best nights we spend together every December!

This year I decided to put into action a new tradition that I have been dying to start.  I always label the month of December as DIY December.  I am home more during December and get to spend  more time with my kids since they are out of school for their winter break!!!  This time off from work gives me more time to craft and bake and get a few projects done around the house.  The first step to DIY December was to construct a reclaimed wood wall by our kitchen table.  I love decorating this wall in our house for any celebration or holiday we have and I thought it would look so much better with wood hung up on it.  My husband and I trekked down to Downtown Los Angeles the day before Thanksgiving and loaded up on some amazing looking barn wood.  That next week my husband sanded and trimmed the boards when he wasn’t working and on his first day off he hung the wood up!  I love having the wood on the wall and I give a giant thank you to my husband, he did a great job and it was up in a snap!  Part 1 of DIY December – Reclaimed Wood Wall Complete!

The next part of DIY December is all about Advent!  I love everything about the season of Advent and I have always been obsessed with Advent calendars and wreaths!!  I love singing O come, O come, Emmanuel and I love lighting the candles on the advent wreath.  I love the anticipation of preparing for the celebration of Christmas and I also love the fun that comes with the daily Advent calendar.  This  was the year I decided to finally put together my very own Advent calendar.  The first step was to head out and gather up my supplies.  I was out shopping and came across these beautiful wood spools with fabric, ribbon and twine and I knew they would be perfect for the calendar.  Next up I needed to get some sort of tree branch so that I could hang the presents with all of my ribbon and twine.  I stopped by the local Christmas tree lot and grabbed a small tree to clean off and it worked out perfect.  After I had stocked up on all the little gifts for my three children all I had to do was wrap everything and get the presents hung up on the branch.  This really was so fun and my kids absolutely love it!  Each night they get to open one package and each package  that includes something for the three of them to share.

I’m not sure what’s up next for DIY December but I am sure it won’t take me long to come up with another creative project or item to bake!!  I wish you all a very happy and fun filled December enjoying this last month of 2014 with your family and friends!!

Happy Holidays!

xoxo
